No Absolutes Allowed!

Someone once said, “My husband will never work here! He needs to earn big bucks to support us.” She was referring to charitable donations to her nonprofit. Guess where he works today? Where he’s supposed to send his big checks to!

The Apostle Peter went through the same thing, when he told Jesus, “Lord, I am ready to go to prison with you, and even to die with you” (Luke 22:33 NLT). Jesus predicted Peter’s denial three times before the cock crows—and it happened.

That’s why I am grateful to my husband Ken, who cautions me about using words like never and always. I certainly don’t want my words to be a trap. It’s hard to make statements I might have to retract later.

Reality can be a harsh teacher. Imagine how it feels to be confronted with a statement you want to forget. Peter wept bitterly, but the damage was done. So, make sure you think twice before you say anything.
