A Netflix series called The Influencer pitted Korean content creators of YouTube, TikTok and Instagram against each other. The TikTok and Instagram influencers are used to capturing audience with momentary, eye-catching posts—sometimes even sexy body shots and provocative dances—to generate positive reactions and comments. On the other hand, YouTube creators are more thoughtful about content, prepared to engage the attention of their fan base for a lengthier period.
Are you an influencer? While we may desire immediate reaction from our audience, we can only hold their interest for a sustained period before they move on. Are you a follower? While you may enjoy consuming visually stimulating images, you need to remember that you need to feed on high-quality stuff too.
Substance over flash still wins, as proven by The Influencer’s grand winner—a YouTuber. But in the end, only “[God’s] wisdom [is what] will save [us] from the ways of wicked men” (Proverbs 2:12, paraphrased). Beware!
