Is Someone Relying on You?

It was past 10 p.m. when my cell phone rang. It was my niece calling, asking if we could pick her up at school as she couldn’t get hold of her parents. We jumped in the car and drove as fast as we could. When we finally had Ruth with us, she said, “Thank you so much. You’re always there for me.”

Many promise to be there for someone. There’s the famous girl’s girl code, where you are to be a supportive and reliable friend. The phrase “I’ve got your back,” which means you’re willing and ready to be of assistance. In good times, you are around to celebrate. And in bad times, you are the shoulder to cry on.

John said, “Let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth” (1 John 3:18). It may not be as easy to be available, but it’s a testament of love and a rewarding experience to make a difference to someone.
