We get caught up in these new and sometimes bizarre events, even participating with posts on social media. It’s fun in the beginning, but when almost every day has been allocated to a celebration of some sort—like National Bloody Mary Day (January 1), International Pancake Day (February 13), and International Joke Day (July 1)—it’s too much.
In the Filipino culture, a birthday is a big celebration, that we look forward to with excitement. We don’t need anyone to throw us a party; we plan it ourselves—family and friends as guests, a new outfit to mark the occasion or a noodle dish to signify the blessing of a long life.
Although celebrations can fill up our calendars, there is a good reason for commemorating events, especially a birthday. Life is short and we need to be thankful for the blessing of each day. Remember that “every good and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father…” (James 1:17).
